I’m a supervisor at one of the bigger farms in South Carolina. It’s a good living, although I find that I miss a lot of the stuff that I used to do. I worked my way up the ladder the past few years – handling animals, helping with the harvest, and other manual labor. What I do now is mostly administrative work – I handle my people and make sure they’re happy, the same way I talk to the middlemen who sell our products in the market.

I found out some time ago that there was going to be a small rodeo slash auction. One particular part of the event I was excited about was the tractor pull. I used to do that sorta thing a lot in my younger days, and I really wanted a chance to do it again at the festival. I was plumb outta luck too. The manager couldn’t let go of the tractors we had, although he gave me free rein with one of the old junkers. What was I to do?

Those were lean times, and I couldn’t ask the boss to shell out money to get it repaired. He was expanding his operations and was funneling the extra money elsewhere.
